Cashew Butter Cookies: Why We Use Cashew Butter (Not Canola Oil)

The Ingredient That Makes Our Cookies Different

When we were developing Good Word Foods protein cookies, we made a decision early on: no seed oils. Not because it was the easy choice — it's actually way harder to get a soft, chewy cookie texture without refined oils — but because we believed in building something better.

The solution? Cashew butter.

It's the backbone of our cookies, and it's one of the main reasons they taste like an actual bakery cookie instead of a protein bar shaped like a disc.

What Is Cashew Butter?

Cashew butter is exactly what it sounds like — blended cashews, ground into a smooth, creamy paste. It's similar to almond butter or peanut butter, but milder and creamier in flavor, which makes it perfect for baking.

Unlike canola oil or vegetable oil, cashew butter is a whole food fat. It naturally contains:

  • Healthy monounsaturated fats
  • Magnesium and zinc
  • A modest amount of protein
  • A rich, buttery flavor that bakes beautifully

Why Cashew Butter Makes a Better Cookie

Texture

Refined oils tend to create a greasy, slightly flat texture in cookies. Cashew butter — like any nut butter — binds ingredients together in a way that creates a soft, chewy, cohesive crumb. It's closer to what you get in a homemade bakery cookie than anything a processed oil can achieve.

Flavor

Canola oil is flavorless by design. Cashew butter brings a subtle, nutty richness that makes every flavor variant taste rounder and more satisfying — even when the main flavor is chocolate chip or birthday cake.

Nutrition

Replacing refined oils with a whole-food fat source like cashew butter means you're getting actual nutrition from the fat in your snack, not just empty calories from a highly processed oil.

Our Three Flavors

Every Good Word Foods protein cookie is made with the same cashew butter base. The three flavors — Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter Chip, and Birthday Cake — each bring something different on top of that foundation:

  • Chocolate Chip: Classic. Real chocolate chips, soft dough, the cookie you grew up with but better for you.
  • Peanut Butter Chip: Rich peanut butter flavor with peanut butter chips. A fan favorite for the PB lovers.
  • Birthday Cake: Somehow sweet without being overwhelming. A little festive, a lot good.

11g Protein, No Compromise

Each cookie has 11 grams of protein — from egg whites, not protein isolates or powders. Combined with the cashew butter base, almond flour, and oats, it's a genuinely satisfying snack that holds you over between meals.
